It didn't matter what Kevin said, Brandon had a retort for everything. The boys were both annoyed with each other, and Kevin was getting more and more frustrated by the moment. “My girlfriend is Jo Haile. I didn’t know until tonight that you guys even knew each other." Jo! He felt even angrier that someone he'd considered a FRIEND had turned on him. Jo had no right saying anything to anyone about him! "She didn’t know why I was asking.” He glared at Brandon, "You shouldn't have asked anything!" He snapped angrily. Brandon shouldn't have talked to Jo about him. It was neither of their business what his life had been like and what he chose to do with it now.
“I know you’re pissed, man. I’ve been caught in a lie too and it’s no fun. But you need to listen up.” Kevin didn't want to listen up! He wanted to punch Brandon. He wanted to run off and never look back, which he was severely considering at this point. He would miss Melanie, but he'd known from the beginning she was too good for him, and this only proved it. He'd been right when he said she was everything he never thought he'd have. Well, he had it for a while, which was more than he could have ever hoped for.
Brandon went on a rant about how great his sister was, as if Kevin didn't already know. Of course he knew! He'd spent the evening with her, he knew how incredible she was. "You don’t think she needs to know? How long do you think you can keep up the rouse? How many lies have you already told her because of the tiny one you started with? You’re just going to keep telling more and more lies until you can’t cover it up anymore and she’s going to find out." No! He wouldn't let her find out, he could cover his tracks. "How hurt do you think she’ll be then? I’m sorry, Kevin, but I won’t let that happen. I’ve seen her hurt too many times, and every time she ends up completely incapacitated for days upon days just like—” Brandon stopped and Kevin tensed, unsure where he was going. He didn't want to hurt Melanie. He should just bow out. He knew it was the only choice he had to try and save any face; take the cowards road.
“I’m giving you a week, Kevin. That’s plenty of time to figure out what you’re going to say. I don’t know why you lied to her about how you grew up, but you don’t need to explain it to me. If after a week you haven’t told the truth, then I’m going to do it.” He felt so helpless standing there. He'd spent his entire life being helpless and the one time he tried to have some amount of control in a situation, it all backfired. He didn't want to be who he was. He wanted to be someone different. He wanted to be the kind of guy worthy of someone like Melanie, and by coughing up the truth he was only proving to her and everyone else that he was the failure he had been born to be. He wanted to crawl under a rock and just die. “I like you, Kevin." He scoffed and rolled his eyes. Like hell he liked him. If Brandon liked him he wouldn't be doing this to him. He would maybe try and hear him out, understand, but Brandon wouldn't. Brandon was giving him an ultimatum. "I think you genuinely care about my sister, and I appreciate that. I think Mel needs someone like you in her life; I think both of you would be good for each other, from what I can tell…so I won’t stand by and watch while you fuck it up.” Kevin just bowed his head angrily, shaking his head. Didn't Brandon see he'd been trying to NOT fuck it up? That the whole reason for his facade was to protect himself and Melanie? Melanie didn't need to think she was with a loser. He could be the kind of guy who she needed and he had been, but now?
"Whatever." He grumbled, helpless as ever. As if things weren't shitty enough, Kevin now realized he was out of his extra part time job, which meant less money on top of it all. He couldn't show his face on that damn boat now. "You have no right to judge me. You have no idea why..." He stopped, gritting his teeth. "It's not even worth it. You've already made your assumptions about me." He growled turning away, hurt and devastated. Brandon would never see things his way. He walked to his car, head bent to keep the rain from his eyes, and then slid into the drivers side. Maybe they could move again.. Kelsey wouldn't be okay with that idea, and their funds were too low for that. He wold need to save for another down payment first. He swore loudly before turning the car off and heading away from the Garcia home, his mind and heart heavy.
He'd just lost the best thing that had ever happened to him.
