History:
Leslie Royer had a complicated pregnancy. At twenty five weeks she was placed on bed rest, but the pregnancy was starting to seriously deteriorate her health. In order to keep her alive doctors told her it would be in her best interest to terminate the pregnancy, but Leslie knew that would mean certain death to her unborn child. He was all she would have when her husband was away, which he currently was. Daniel Royer was in the army, and was stationed in South Korea during most of his wife's pregnancy and had been looking forward to coming home to meet his child. Leslie decided to push through, but at thirty five weeks doctors told her that her child's life was now at stake as well. They would need to perform a c-section, and they would do their best to keep the infant alive.
Logan Samual Royer was born on January 06, 1983, and though the infant thrived, his mother did not. When he was only nine days old his mother passed away from complications and the boy was left in the care of Leslie's father, Edward Holder, until the boys own father returned from his post. Daniel didn't get to meet his son until the boy was seven months old, enough time for his grandfather to grow severely attached to the child. He'd never had a son of his own, and his daughter had been the light of his life. Logan was his second chance at having the son he'd been denied. It didn't help that he wasn't a fan of the man her daughter married. Daniel didn't come from money, and Edward feared that the mans military background might influence his grandson to serve as well. He had nothing against the military, really. They did a fine job protecting their country and keeping it sound, but it wasn't a life for a Holder. So when Daniel came home, Edward struck a deal. He told the boys father that if he gave up his rights to the boy, he would want for nothing. Logan would attend the finest schools and would be guaranteed a hefty trust fund, something Daniel could never dream of affording his child. Keeping Logan would mean the boy would be cut off completely from the Holder family. Knowing he still had a few years to serve, and knowing there was no one really to watch the boy when he left, Daniel agreed. He signed his rights away to his dead wife's father thinking it was really the best thing for the boy. True to his promise, Edward gave the boy every privilege and advantage money could buy a child, including his established last name. Logan Samuel Royer turned into Samuel Logan Holder before his first birthday.
Sam lived a charmed life. He attended the top boarding schools in the country and always came out in the top five of his class. He was quick, friendly, and eager to learn. He especially loved history and it wasn't uncommon for him to devour a book in a single sitting if he was interested enough in the topic. The more he read, the more interested in law he became, so it was no surprise that he planned to attend law school. He went for his undergraduate at Yale completing his first three years with ease, but the summer before his senior year his grandfather grew ill. Sam returned to the west coast to be by his side where he learned the truth about his fathers absence in his life. Fearing he may not survive, Edward knew he owed Sam the truth. Grandfather had always told Sam his father had a difficult time coping with the death of his mother and couldn't bear the sight of Sam, but he learned that his father had truly wanted him, only to be manipulated by his grandfather to give him away. Betrayed, Sam set out on a search for his father, getting the mans name from his grandfather. It wasn't terribly hard to find him, and the reunion was better than Sam could have ever hoped. Sam spent a great deal of time with his father, getting to know him and the family that he made after Sam was no longer in his life. He learned more about his mother in a new light, one not manipulated by Grandfather. At the end of the summer Sam decided that he wanted to honor his father and spite his grandfather simultaneously and told Yale he would be taking leave to join the service, much to his grandfathers dismay. The man threw every threat he could to keep the boy home and safe, but Sam wouldn't hear it. When he should have been flying to Connecticut, he was knee deep in basic training.
Grandfather pulled through his illness and was soon in good condition, if not a little worse for wear. Sam easily got through basic training and had been deployed to Iraq. He served for just under a year before returning home, only to get the order that he was needed to go to Afghanistan four months later. He took the order with his head held high, deciding it was his honor and duty to fight as his father had, and his fathers before him. He'd been in the country for only three months when he got sent on a mission that would change his life forever. Sam ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. A grenade was launched and exploded too close to him, and it was by some miracle that he even survived, but at a price. He nearly lost his leg. The wound was so bad that he could see the bone through his tattered and torn fatigues, but fortunately his brothers were able to get him to safety though his leg would never be the same.
Sam was discharged with a purple heart, an award he wore with honor. It had been nearly two years since he enlisted, and he felt he served his time well. Eager to move on with his life, Yale graciously accepted him for his fourth and final year, and he graduated with honors the following summer. Rehabilitation had been difficult. For months Sam was in a wheelchair, and then crutches until finally he was able to walk with the use of a cane. He attended Harvard Law for the rest of his schooling, working hard on his education and on regaining the complete use of his leg. By the time he graduated he was able to walk without any assistance, though the limp would last forever. He was immediately hired as an apprentice at one of the most prestigious law firms in Scriptor Bay, his home. Eager to be with his father and Grandfather, he moved back west to start the next exciting chapter of his life.
