History:
Erin had been the light of her parents lives. Her father, Kenneth, had of course wanted a son but the fair skinned daughter he was born had quickly wrapped the man around her tiny little pinky. Her mother, Belle, saw Erin as little more than a doll to dress up and adore. From a young age Erin had been taught to study and work hard. She played piano, danced ballet, could speak French fluently and was still academically more advanced than many of her peers. By twelve she had visited over thirty countries and had seen every wonder of the world. Her parents had high hopes for her, and she strove to please them.
It was no surprise that every ivy league college she applied to accepted her, and it was all down to the young woman to decide which was best for her. After weeks of making pros and cons lists and picking them apart with a very fine toothed comb, Erin chose to attend Yale. The August after she graduated from high school she flew to Connecticut to start her greatest adventure yet! Only the adventure she was about to embark on was not the one that she had expected.
Halfway through the Spring semester of Erin's freshman year of college she had gotten very sick. She woke up one morning vomiting and felt queasy on and off all day. She figured it was something she'd eaten and that it would eventually pass. She felt fine other than the occasional spell of nausea. Then it got worse. Erin got a fever and couldn't stop the nausea, not even able to hold down a glass of water. Afraid, her roommate brought her to the emergency room at the local hospital to get checked out. It was there that she learned she'd acquired the flu, and that she was also pregnant. After answering some questions and running a few tests it was determined that she was about nine weeks pregnant, but Erin didn't believe it until she had an ultrasound, confirming the fetus' age. It was in that moment, when Erin saw the tiny fluttering heart beat on that grainy, black and white screen, that she knew her life as she knew it was about to change, and drastically.
Erin finished the semester without a word to anyone, her parents included. What could she do? She couldn't go the entire summer without being found out, and the baby was due halfway through the fall semester. Could she raise the child in secret while attending school? She was barely nineteen, much too young for a child, and she had no idea who the father was. She'd met him at a party and had been too drunk to realize what was happening until it was too late. Disoriented she hadn't told him to stop, and if presented a line up she wasn't sure she could pick him out. Aborting the baby wasn't an option though, and she wasn't sure she could bear the idea of giving it away despite the way the baby came to exist. She knew if anyone could guide her it was her mothers cousin Cora, who had become a mother herself at sixteen and in turn became an outcast to the family.
Erin had never been close to Cora, as most people in their family, but the woman opened her home and her heart to Erin and quickly became the girls confidant. It was with Cora's help that Erin found the strength to tell her parents about the child growing in her, and her wishes to come back home and put her degree on hold. Devastated her parents tried to convince her to reconsider and offered alternitives, but none of their options coincided with Erin's wishes to raise the child herself. They begrudgingly accepted that their daughter had overnight become a slut and a failure and their treatment towards her had become cold, though they accepted her back into their home. Erin didn't stay long, though. At the end of the summer she grew tired of her parents treatment and caved to Cora's request to live with her and her daughter Julie, who was only three years younger than Erin herself.
A healthy baby girl was born on October 28, 2002. Erin named her Molly and promised her that she would accept and her and love her regardless of her mistakes, and she made sure to follow that promise. Cora had been kind enough to not only take Erin in, but to give her a job at her bakery. The girl worked hard and her extended family helped with the burden of raising a child. Erin stayed in Cora's home until just past Molly's first birthday, and then she found a small studio apartment to share with her daughter, though they visited Cora and Julie often.
Erin grew and developed, her outlook on life changing with the everyday struggles she faced. She was a young single mother, poor, and a college dropout but despite her shortcomings she was happy and enjoyed her life as much as she was able. She eventually went back to school, taking night classes at the local university while her 'cousin' Julie watched over her sleeping daughter. She took on more responsibilities at Cora's Cupcakes and helped it grow, aiding her 'aunt' with catering, advertising and number crunching. She worked hard, devoted to making the bakery reach its highest potential as a way of thanking Cora for opening her eyes to a different path in life. One day she knew she would probably move on, knowing that she had great potential and had outgrown the little bakery, but money wasn't important to Erin. Not anymore. Grace, love and family trumped all with her, and her loyalty kept her plateaued at Cora's Cupcakes, but Erin O'Brien would have it no other way.
