History: Sydney had a very fortunate life. Growing up in Scriptor Bay had pros and it had cons but it was the only life that Sydney knew and she didn’t have any plans to leave anytime soon. She had roots here that were far too deep for her to ever pull out. Her mother’s side of the family had been in Scriptor Bay since they first came over as slaves stolen from their homelands. Not that the Jackson family held a grudge. If they hadn’t been here then they wouldn’t be the strong individuals they were today. Although both men and women in the Jackson line could be Geomancers it didn’t necessarily mean that everyone did. They didn’t understand why but the magical gene sometimes skipped a person and seemed to be stronger in the women. The Jackson women were the ones who practiced the magic while the men took other responsibilities. It had been that way since they first received their magical bloodline.
Sydney’s father’s side, however, was Swedish. Her father had come to America when he was only twenty years old wanting to further his education by attending an American college. His family had always been well off so making such a drastic move had never been a problem financially. It was when he was in northern California with a psychology major that he met Sydney’s mother. They always told her that it had been love at first sight. That their life was like something out of a movie. Sydney didn’t know if she really believed it to be like that but she did know that her parents loved one another very much and it had been her father’s decision to move back to her mother’s birthplace so she could be near her family when they got engaged. Two months after they were married they found out they were going to have a baby.
And six years later they had another.
Sydney was the oldest of the two girls but unlike most older siblings she wasn’t rotten to her younger sister. She cared for her and loved to do all sorts of activities with her. They were a close knit family who did everything together. That included magic.
Her mother decided it would be best to start Sydney off young with her training in her magic. She was told that she was a goddess who was responsible for creating her own happiness, and that said happiness could be obtained through dedication and hard work. She was taught that although she could do almost anything with herbs and potions that it wasn’t always wise to. There were boundaries and to never work with her magic when she was upset or angry. Negative feelings often had negative effects. Naturally, Sydney learned everything better from personal experience instead of listening to her mother’s cautious words.
At sixteen, when her boyfriend broke up with her, she slipped him a sleeping potion. He was on the football team and she wanted to make him fall asleep in a few classes and miss practice. It was petty but she was just a hurt teenaged girl. However, the potion that she had mixed up had been too strong and her ex slipped into a two week coma. Lucky for her nobody figured out that it had been her who caused it, but it left her devastated and full of regret for what she’d done. After that she made a promise to her mother and to herself that she would never practice magic in that state again. Although she’d been tempted over the years she has yet to do it again.
Now in college she’s taking all her pre-requisite courses first before she figures out just what she wants to do with her life. She still practices her magic in her shared dorm room on campus and goes home on Sundays for dinner with the family. She doesn’t know if she’ll ever leave Scriptor Bay or if she even wants to continue the Jackson bloodline.
