History: Mason’s life used to be normal. He played soccer and was homeschooled, and his parents liked to take him on hikes out in the woods near Megsy Isle. The sunlight made him feel strong and happy and when darkness fell, he went right to sleep with a good bedtime story. He dreamed of gingerbread houses and women with fishtails and he hardly ever had nightmares. His mother was always there when he did though, her golden hair falling around him as she held him tight. Mason loved his mother, but his loved his father too. He was the one who read stories to him and lifted him high up in the air so he could feel like he was flying, giving a big dimpled smile. His dad promised they would go flying together someday soon.
That was all before the sickness, though. His parents brought him to City Hall for a shot. It wouldn’t hurt that much and it was just to make sure he didn’t get sick. Instead, the shot made him sick. He felt sleepy and dizzy, and when he woke up he was in his mother’s arms on a bus. Somehow he went back to sleep and when he woke again, his dad was shaking him and telling him to wake up, he had to walk. So they did; Mason stumbled off the bus and went through a big gate, rubbing his eyes sleepily as his dad held his shoulders. He really just wanted to go back to sleep. But suddenly his dad stopped, grabbing his mom’s hand and scooping Mason up. Mason didn’t know when he had taken his harness off, or when his mom had taken off hers, but they started to run in the other direction. Their wings flapped hard, his dad’s wings big and snow white…until one turned red after a loud crack. His mother screamed, but not for long. They weren’t high in the air, but it hurt when Mason came tumbling to the ground, gripped tight in his dad’s embrace. His mom’s hair was sprawled about her head, but she wasn’t moving. His dad was trying to breathe, trying to say something, but he couldn’t. Mason begged him not to go, begged him to stay, but his dad whispered one last thing: “Mason…” And then he was gone.
Mason cried for three days. Then he couldn’t feel anything anymore. It was like he hurt so much that he’d gotten used to it. He stopped talking altogether, unable to find words when there was no one to speak them too. He didn’t have a mother anymore, so he was put with the other boys, but made to work with the men. The smallest one, he was glad he usually went unnoticed. It was easier that way when nobody was talking to him. There was no one to talk to anymore.
