History: Since his birth, Robert has known how the world works. Kindness gets in the way of true power. The most affection he received from his parents was his father letting him know when he was proud of him. As the head of the Gargoyle Council, his father was a hardened business man with little regard for the sanctity of life. He ran a business and he kept the Gargoyles in line with a firm hand. If a Gargoyle betrayed its kind, there was no doubt their demise was imminent. He was calculating, however, and if he believed a Gargoyle’s ill deeds could benefit the Gargoyle community in some way, he would find a way to sweep their crimes under the rug and use that as fodder for blackmailing them should they ever tried to rise up against the Council. Robert was his only child, his only son, and while he showed little warmth towards the boy, he deserved to be rewarded when he made his old man proud. Whether Robert did well on a test or effectively used other children to get what he needed, Robert’s father groomed him to be another version of himself, but better.
Robert grew up a cruel young man. He had no friends; friends were useless. There were those he manipulated to do as he asked, however. Other Gargoyles, his peers and younger, he used them to get what he needed, whether that was lunch or another kid beaten up for his smart mouth. He didn’t need other Gargoyles to do his dirty work, though; he was perfectly capable of doing it himself. He just liked to see how easy it was to get others to do it for him. Robert was a brawny kid with a sharp mind and a cool demeanor. It was just as well that he didn’t smile often or laugh, though; he was scarier when he did either of those. As the years past, he grew more and more resolved to take the Politician’s path as his father had done. That was a proud day for his father, and Robert took a secret joy in making his father proud. It was the only real joy he found in anything.
The training was rigorous, but easy for Robert. He easily rose to the top of his peer group, but he maintained the strength of a Guardian. Though his charisma got him places, a bulky, imposing figure could get you even further. He came to realize how easy it was to manipulate women to do his bidding if he flashed them a peek of that dangerous smile and his sharp blue eyes. His words were eloquent, though dangerous, his deep voice giving them a greater appeal. It was evident he was going far.
His father and the Gargoyle leader were old friends, or as friendly as two men like them could be. Robert caught the leader’s eye as a burgeoning, bright young Gargoyle, and he soon took him under his wing. Though Robert remained as stony and unfeeling as he was raised to be, the leader helped him to become more personable to allow others more room to actually like him, and therefore more likely to do his bidding. In his younger years, he played at friendship with others, but it always ended in threats. The leader taught him that forgiveness, at times, could be more useful than threats or retribution. Robert picked up on the game well, and showed his interest in becoming very much like his mentor.
It was during his mentorship that he discovered how easy it was to take a life and cover it up. He also learned how necessary it was. The leader trusted him with more and more projects, and he made the mistake of letting one dissatisfied player in these projects go. It was a mistake he would never repeat. As soon as the man was tracked down, spilling information on the project and threatening the lives of others, he was killed quickly. Robert resolved that the next time, death would not be quick. He wanted people who rose against him, the leader, or the Council to be punished slowly and painfully. It further discouraged uprisings against him. Seeing the potential the boy had and knowing what a stern, good leader he would be, the leader named him as his successor.
He was still relatively young when he took up his position as leader, jumping from a high place on the Council to the big chair itself. Most of the leader’s ways were kept intact at first, leaving little difference between the two reigns, but that changed over the years. Robert became less forgiving than his mentor and crueler in his punishment; this would have been a perfect combination with the Council if they had remained as crafty and brilliant as they were under his father. Unfortunately, the state of the Council deteriorated to a hollow shell of what it once was, bringing up new members much weaker and more forgiving than the Council before them. Robert has become dissatisfied with the Council and wants to find some way to reform it and make it back into what it was. He is a cruel, unforgiving, and brilliant leader and has yet to choose a worthy successor.
