History: Melanie barely knew her mother. She lived for the first five years of Melanie’s life before she passed away. Nancy had been weak ever since Melanie was born, and when she got pregnant a third time, it was too much for her body. Her little sister was stillborn and her mother died during childbirth, leaving her and her older brother Brandon with their father. Wayne Garcia was a quiet, kind man, who did what he could to provide for his family. He was prone to fits of depression, however, and there would be days over the years when he just couldn’t get out of bed. Melanie became his caretaker during these episodes, even as a young child, and her father would often be comforted by how much his daughter look like her mother. She began to take after her father greatly with her quiet and sweet nature.
Her brother was her polar opposite. Brandon was outgoing and loud and prone to angry outbursts. Everyone growing up described him as a hothead. As much as Melanie adored her older brother, she often worried about him getting into trouble. He in turn worried about her getting hurt by people who took advantage of her. Brandon and Wayne sheltered her perhaps a little too much, and she grew up with an air of sweet naiveté. But Melanie began to show signs of her father’s fits of sorrow as well. There would be times when she would fall into tears remembering her mother and her little sister who never lived, and she was quick to cry when she heard of others’ heartaches. Her attitude took on an almost melancholy demeanor, but she was sweet to a fault. It only made her brother more protective of her.
When she grew old enough to fly, her brother barely let her make the initial leap to fly. It was one of the only times in her life that she insisted on her own independence, and her father quietly held Brandon back from holding her hand. Turns out, Melanie was a fantastic flyer, just like her father and brother. She enjoyed flying low over the water and scooping up fish, like her father occasionally did, and bring them home for dinner. It made her feel a sense of camaraderie with the eagles her wings took after. But her wings took her high into the sky too, and she loved to just soar high into the air and dive back down to earth. It was a thrill unlike any other she enjoyed in life.
She excelled in school and made a couple good friends, but she kept to herself mostly. She didn’t date often, since she was often very shy around men. Her brother scared off most of the suitors who came for her anyway. When it was time for him to start traveling, he didn’t want to leave her alone, but she just smiled and pushed him out of the door, almost literally. She knew it was his duty, and she was starting to become more confident in herself; not much, but enough to stand on her own. It was a good experience for her, since she got more independence, but her father fell into his days of sorrow more often than before. A few years later, when it was time for her to begin traveling, she couldn’t stand the thought of leaving her father alone with no one to pull him out of his depressions. He insisted, though, and pushed her out of the nest almost as she had done to her brother. If anything befell him, she knew she could be there in a matter of hours, no matter where in the world she went.
Already fluent in Spanish, Melanie travelled to South America first. She saw breathtaking beauty and abject poverty, all of which tore at her heart. She fell in love with the heat of the jungle and the cool mountaintops. After a year there, she decided she would see the rest of the world, but nothing was as beautiful to her as the culture and land she found in South America. Two years later, she stopped hearing from her father. He had been writing her letters, but after a month of hearing nothing, she rushed back home, fearing something was wrong. And it was. Her father, in one of his fits of melancholy, had tied a rock around his waist and jumped from a cliff on Megsie Isle into the sea below. Another Avisaille had found his body, but they hadn’t known any way to contact his family. Melanie was devastated and spent six months from her travels mourning the loss of her father. Her brother insisted she needed to continue, but every day was a struggle for Melanie.
At last, she found the strength to pick up her bags and return to her travels. Her tears were all cried out and she had seen the very depths of her own despair. Suicide had crossed her mind several times, but she had never followed through. After one night of considering this, she decided she couldn’t do that to her brother, and she wouldn’t follow in her father’s misguided footsteps. Her strength returned, she completed her travels, finding she could appreciate them more without having to worry about her father. Every year on the anniversary of his death, however, she spends the day alone, remembering him and crying. Her bouts of melancholy aren’t as frequent as they used to be, but there are days that hurt more than others.
When she returned from her travels, she decided to apply her caretaking skills to becoming a pediatric nurse. She has worked in various hospitals over the years, always trying to keep her identity hidden, but whenever she leaves, it’s a struggle. The children love her, as do her coworkers, and her compassion strikes a chord with the parents she comforts on occasion. It is difficult for her to work with the very sick children, but she will soldier through it, if only to break into tears when she’s alone. She adores her job, though, and remains close to her brother Brandon, who has taken over his father’s fishing business.
