History: Lafayette had a hard time growing up. His father left when he was hardly a toddler and his mother was on and off drugs and alcohol. She had Lafayette young, and though she legitimately tried to clean herself up to raise her son, it took her years to do so. When he was very young, they lived in the poorest area of Scriptor Bay and his mother barely made enough money to support them as a gardener. At seven, their lives got a little better when she finally kicked her bad habits and became a cook at the diner in town. She also assisted in a small apothecary business, as a fellow Geomancer, and thereby met the James family. This was how Lafayette met their young daughter, Abigail.
Abby became Lafayette’s best friend. Unlike the kids at school, Abby didn’t care about Lafayette’s home circumstances. She was too young to notice how poor he and his mother were, and she didn’t pay attention to the color of his skin, either. As they grew up, she came to be like a little sister to Lafayette, and she affectionately began to call him LaLa. Things went as well as they could go until Lafayette reached middle school.
He began to notice that he wasn’t attracted to girls at all. He liked to be friends with them, and he wished he could wear make-up and do his hair like they did. They got to be pretty, why couldn’t he? The other boys were going girl crazy, talking about boobs and stuff, but Lafayette just wasn’t interested. He finally came to the conclusion when he was 14 that he was gay. The girls he befriended knew, and other kids had a good idea, but he stayed in the closet for a few more years. His mother also knew, as mothers usually do, and it was when she caught him painting his face with her make-up that she had “The Talk” with him. She told him whatever he was, that was who he was, and nobody could stop him from being that. He should be proud that he was as smart and resourceful and damn good at doing make-up as he was.
Lafayette’s attitude changed from there. He came out and was as flamboyantly gay as he knew he could be, and he had the attitude to match. The other boys at school tried to bully him, but Lafayette beefed himself up to keep that from happening. He wasn’t involved in sports, but he worked out like a fiend, so much so that the straight boys envied his body. There were a few other gay guys in the school, but so many of them were too shy and closeted to have an open relationship with Lafayette, so he got what he needed when he needed it.
All through high school, his mother began having increasing problems with her mental health. She would go into extreme highs and lows, and doctors diagnosed her as bipolar. The medications helped, but there were additional problems as well. She had borderline personality disorder, even more serious than bipolar disorder, and no amount of medication could cure it. She was either irritable or scathing, or she couldn’t get out of bed in the morning. As the years went on, she got worse, and it was getting harder for Lafayette to take care of her. He began working at the diner to help pay bills, but also to keep an eye on his mother when he could. To this day he fears becoming like his mother to the point that it is almost crippling.
When he graduated, he had no plans for college and no interest in it. He wanted to get to working immediately. His mother was taking a downward spiral in her mental health, so he took over her job at the diner. Soon he realized he couldn’t take care of his mother, as she was getting closer and closer to committing suicide and she would try to do it several times in a week. But he couldn’t afford to put her in a hospital on just the pittance he made. He did whatever odd jobs he could to put money in his pocket, but it wasn’t lucrative. He started selling drugs on the side and found himself making new ones with his knowledge of Geomancy. His knowledge in Geomancy also aided his cooking capabilities, and he secured his spot as the cook in the diner for as long as he wanted it.
Now, since Abby is back, he aids her in her apothecary business which she inherited from her father, but also continues to sell drugs on the side. He knows Abby doesn’t approve, but he would never think to drag her into his side business. Most of his money goes to the hospital he keeps his mother in to keep her from committing suicide and her health continues to deteriorate. He manages to keep a small house, though, right near Abby’s, and also manages to pay his bills.
