History: When Sean and Margot McManus’ second daughter was born on St. Patrick’s Day, Sean decided her middle name had to be Erin in celebration of his Irish heritage, which suited her bright red hair.
Maxine, or Maxi for short, grew up alongside her sister Maureen, born three years earlier. Indulging in their Blurr abilities, they would often pull pranks on each other, and challenge the other to become better at their concealment. Basically, they took hide-and-seek to a whole new level. She was very cautious around other children, though, her parents constantly reminding her that she couldn’t play with the other children like she played with her sister. Maxi became reserved and rather shy, but once she came out of her shell she was quite friendly. She excelled in school all through her childhood, and continued to through adolescence in every subject but math. Her true love was in literature and she was determined to one day become an English teacher.
Life was peachy until she reached the age of 18; then tragedy struck. Maxi was left at her grandmother’s house with pneumonia while her parents and sister went on a fishing trip. They were going to spend the weekend on their boat, fishing out beyond the bay. Maxi begged them to put it off for another week so she could come along, but her parents had been planning for months and were determined to take the time off work. They promised they would make it up to her. A sudden storm hit the night they were out on the water, but it cleared up as quickly as it arrived. A week later, Sean, Margot, and Maureen still had not come home. The Coast Guard searched everywhere for them, but only their boat was found floating out to see. Her family was gone, disappeared. For months, Maxi believed they would come back to her; but as months turned to years, she slowly gave up hope. They were probably dead, and the thought crushed her spirit. She was never as cheerful from that incident on as she had been growing up.
For the past ten years, Maxi has been a high school English teacher, her greatest pleasure being her work. Though she has friends, she doesn’t consider any of them close, and she has isolated herself from any relationship that might result in the same kind of pain she felt at losing her family. The dating scene has been rather dull, though boyfriends and flings have come and gone over the years. She wants something more, but she’s terrified of actually getting it. It isn’t what she is that deters her, but the possibility of losing something else dear to her.
RP Sample: Maxi loved her job more than anything in the world. The students were great, if not unruly as a result of their hectic teenage years, but they kept her young. Actually, it was being a Blurr that kept her young, but the youth the students lent her correlated with her youthful appearance. Maxi had a way about her that drew some of the most difficult students to cooperation, which helped her to be one of the favored teachers in school. When others asked her how she did it, she said, “Just be real with them.” Really, for her it was as simple as that.
When she could help students out with other subjects, she was glad to do so. Some of the more dedicated students came to her with questions not related to literature, hoping she might be able to explain it better than the teachers who taught the subjects. Looking at the work reminded her how glad she was to be past high school. Most of the time she loved learning, but there were certain subjects and assignments she would never understand. The piece of paper in front of her, for example; the teacher gave a sample of what to do at the top of the bag, and yet it still looked like Greek to her. Maxi studied the paper for a long moment, tempted to ask who this student’s teacher was and where their classroom was located. If that teacher was still spouting off that this work would still be beneficial to the student later on in life, she might have to have a long and serious talk with that teacher.
She could understand the importance of Shakespeare and understanding his language, or the importance of learning how to write a thesis statement, or the appropriate used of there, they’re, and their. But this…this she would never understand the importance of. Sighing, exasperated and frustrated by her ignorance, she shook her head and handed the paper back to her student. “How can 2x+3j+8=x? Numbers do not equal letters,” she grumbled matter-of-factly. Maxi gave a smile when the student laughed, and clasped her hands on her desk. “Looks like you’re on your own, Buddy.” Her smile was a disappointed one, but she didn’t mind checking to see if he needed anything else. She was hoping it would be something that didn’t make her feel like an idiot when he pulled out a history book. The day was looking up.
