History: Cottonwood, TX wasn’t exactly known for its modern living or educated townsfolk. It was a middle of nowhere town, with a middle of nowhere mentality. Most of the kids that grew up there never left, always swearing they would, but no matter how far they got, they always ended up back at home, settling in the town they despised from their youth. It was a quaint place where everybody knew everybody and outsiders were sometimes welcome, but not always. Often they would be gossiped about until the towns people got better acquainted and even then there was no guarantee you would be accepted and considered one of them.
Alyson Montgomery’s family had been in Cottonwood since her great, great grand-pappy John settled there with his wife, Mabel. Some of the Montgomery’s had been fortunate enough to get away, but most had stayed within the town. Alyson was determined to be one of the ones who got away.
Alyson was in no way like the other youths in her high school, which due to the size of her town and the amount of youths in it, was located more than a half hour away since they shared it with a neighboring town. She had always had a flair for being a little alternative, preferring to listen to rock music and blog online rather than join the 4H or agriculture club. She did, however, after a great deal of persuasion from her best friend, join the cheerleading squad. Even then she stood out like a sore thumb; not because she didn’t look the part, but because she didn’t act it. She came off as cold and snooty, when really she was quiet and down to earth.
But all of that was behind her. Graduating high school meant one thing and one thing only; Good bye, Cottonwood! She decided to go to a school on the coast, and thought maybe the west coast would suit her better. After looking for several months, she finally decided on Greenwolfe University in Scriptor Bay, OR. The city turned out to be exactly what she had been looking for, and she soon found that she fit into the pleasant hustle and bustle of the little city. For the first time in her life, she felt like this was somewhere she belonged.
The myths had caught her attention since the first day she had heard of them. It had been her Anthropology professor who had first introduced the stories to her freshman year. He had explained about the tree and the guardians and the battle that had brought them there. Of course she didn’t believe it, but she hadn’t known the rich background of the city prior to coming and it still fascinated her. Cottonwood had nothing like that. She found herself drawn more to the tree after that and had even witnessed a few things she thought were odd. Once during her sophomore year, she and some friends had decided to go camping near Megsy Isle. At one point she thought she had seen an enormous bird fly around the cliffs, but had dismissed it, figuring it was her imagination since she’d had a joint and a couple of beers. Another time she could have sworn she’d seen a chimp in the park. In fact, she insisted upon it, but no chimps had escaped the zoo, and it had run off before she could really get a good look at it. For these two reasons she stayed clear of the woods, deciding some strange animals lived there. Either way, she liked the city, she liked her life there and that no one knew her when she walked down the street. People didn’t comment about how she had her grandmother Opal’s curly blond hair or her great grandfather George’s eyes. She was a stranger, and they were content with that, and she decided so was she.
