It was surprisingly simple, really, breaking into the camps. The entire perimeter is comprised of an electric fence. Within, the camps are simply open areas and concrete buildings. We knew what each of the buildings comprised of from inside sources. We knew exactly where the Therians and the Avisailles would be located in the early morning. The first step was to disable the fences. There were Elementalists there to assist us in this. They blasted the fences with electricity, causing the systems to overflow with electricity and thus short circuit and become useless. Of course, that caught the guards’ attention from the towers and they engaged us in a fire fight. In the dark with a bunch of buildings to hide behind, it was easy to snipe from the shadows and pick off the watchtower guards one by one. It was when the other guards appeared that the gunfire became more difficult and dangerous. By that point, there were already witches and Gargoyles working to free the Avisailles and the Therians from their locked barracks. A few of us were shot, but at that point there were no fatalities on our side. Robert was heading up breaking open the Therian barracks while I headed up the Avisailles.
I found the Avisailles’ security was much less than what was reported to me later of the Therians’ security. It was easy to put a gun to the guards’ heads and instruct them to open the bunker where Callum was being held. When one didn’t comply, I fired a warning shot in the air. After pissing himself, he complied and I instructed the other Gargoyle, Stokes, to take the other guard, blubbering as she was, to open the female barracks. Meanwhile, the guard took me to Callum, who I notified of what was going on so that he might gather his people. Of course he thanked me, but he didn’t waste time. I ordered the guard to take us to the barracks of the male Avisailles. The females were already free and Callum moved to speak to them while I ordered the guard to let me into the barracks. As soon as I was in with the male Avisailles, I instructed them to escape quickly and efficiently and to make straight for the woods. Most listened, but some darted for the Therian camp or the female barracks after my instruction. It was not for me to stop them; I told them what to do. Callum caught many of them, but some defied his instruction to turn and make a run for it.
I assumed a similar process was being carried out in the Therian camp. When I looked to see their progress I could see the stampede of people making a run for the fences, whether to the outside or to the other camp. Some Therians and Avisailles embraced before they made their run for it. The guards were overwhelmed in numbers, but that didn’t stop them from wounding and killing those trying to escape. They were quickly overpowered. I could see Robert making his way toward me, the gunfire calming as he smiled. “Looks like it was a success.” That was the last thing he said. The next I knew his blood was splattered all over me and a huge chunk of his skull was missing. I’ve never seen a brain before…but that’s what I could see. He simply fell forward as I caught him, the peaceful look still on his face. I thought he was dead. When I felt him breathing, I didn’t know what to do. I started screaming for a doctor. Thankfully they had several there trying to escape. There were many Gargoyles willing to transport the body while the doctors did what they could to sustain him and bandage the wound. Now the doctors are telling me they don’t know when he’ll recover…or even if he’ll recover…I guess that leaves me in charge. Robert Snow was a much better leader than I could hope to be…but I will try my best to do what’s right for the Gargoyles.
