It wasn’t supposed to happen the way it did.
There was a group of us: me, David, Jimmy, and Russ. We’ve been friends forever, you know? Well, as we were leaving the bar, Jimmy gets to talking about that incident with the shifter killing somebody. What kind of freak does that? We were talking about what if we ever met one and talking about the people we knew that maybe were shifters too and we just never knew. Mostly we were kidding around, but Jimmy kept talking about how the city just wasn’t safe anymore with those things around. He said they should just lock them all up or get rid of them; there’s enough crime on the streets without people shifting into animals adding to it.
We were passing by an alley when we heard it. It was like this…this growl. We looked and we just saw yellow eyes through the darkness of the alley. David almost pissed himself he was so scared at first. It walked forward slowly, like it was stalking prey, and we saw a panther. A panther in Scriptor Bay! We all just stood still, trying not to make any sudden movements that would piss the panther off. But then Jimmy backed away slowly and the panther was watching him. Russ freaked out and ran forward, kicking it hard in the stomach, it turned on him, but David jumped in on the kicking too. By the time Jimmy jumped in, he had a piece of metal piping. I don’t know where he got it, but it must have been why he walked away. And I…I couldn’t just watch them get hurt, you know? They’re my best friends. I had to help. That panther could have attacked them!
The panther was screaming…like really screaming…it was awful. I stopped kicking it, but David and Russ were still kicking while Jimmy just brought the pipe down over and over and over…And then the panther was still and…and there was blood everywhere. Everywhere. I don’t even know where it all came from. It must have been from the panther, but I don’t remember it bleeding that much. I don’t even know how long it lasted. It seemed like forever, but it was probably all together ten minutes. When I saw how much blood there was…I told them to stop. Russ stopped first and then David, but Jimmy kept hitting its head until I pulled him away.
We had to save each other, though. That panther was dangerous! It was stalking us! I mean, it didn’t hurt us until we tried to hurt it, but it could have gotten us all really quickly if we didn’t strike first. It wasn’t even really human, so how can you call it murder? Murder implies there’s a human involved; what we did was put down a rabid animal. I’ll admit it was harsh and cruel but it needed to be done. Maybe someday when they’ve killed all of us and taken over the city you’ll understand. Maybe then you’ll thank us.
