Sophie could see Rebecca’s hesitation. Of course she was hesitant—she probably wasn’t comfortable talking about the details of a case with a reporter. Sophie had just gotten so excited, she didn’t even consider that! She was about to put a disclaimer and let her sister know she didn’t have to talk about it if she didn’t want, that Sophie knew she was rude to ask, but to her surprise Rebecca nodded. “I did work on that case.” Really?! She sat up straighter, bouncing a little in her seat as she leaned forward, questions bubbling up. Before they could escape, however, Rebecca held up her hand to block all of them. “I’m not at liberty to discuss the case, though. Confidentiality breach, and my boss would seriously harm me if he knew. I think he has a thing for the woman in question.” Sophie smiled and looked intrigued. A romance between the main person on O’Brien’s case and O’Brien herself? How did that happen? There were so many possibilities and she could only imagine them. “It’s an interesting case, though…and I might be able to help get you in with the suspect in question, but I make no promises. If…that’s what you wanted.” Sophie nodded vigorously, leaning in a little more again. “Yes! If it’s not too much trouble!” What a story that would be! Her editor would love it! And she would get to visit the place where her sister lived and see her friend and boyfriend! Rebecca nodded again and Sophie grinned like a little kid on Christmas. “I’ll see what I can do then. The city doesn’t have lots of cases like that, though. It’s mostly pretty nice, but strange things do happen there. I don’t know if you recall the strange darkness that settled over the city about a year ago…odd things are known to happen. It makes it exciting to live there. We get weird animal sightings all the time. There is a lot of story potential out that way.” She had a point. Sophie did remember hearing about the strange weather system that hovered very unnaturally over the city, but she hadn’t remembered the name until now. It had been big news with a lot of speculation.
Smiling, she nodded again. “You’re right, there is a lot of story potential there. I remember there was talk about an outbreak of some parasite, too! I forgot that that storm system happened in Scriptor Bay, but I remember it happened right around the time of that outbreak and in the same city. I wonder what causes it…” She trailed off, genuinely considering the possibilities. Sophie really believed in the supernatural and she wondered if there was an explanation dealing with energies around the city. Realizing she was being quiet, she blinked and shook her head and straightened again, smiling. “Anyway, I just want to let you know I won’t write anything that would get you in trouble. If I do get a chance to talk to the culprit, the focus will only be on him. And if I do try to pursue an interview with Miss O’Brien, I won’t mention you at all, I promise. It’s so cool that you live in a place with so much going on! I thought L.A. had a lot to write about, but it’s all fashion trends and culture. Nothing meaty. Usually we only publish one or two features per issue and I really think this one could make it in. That’s if I get an interview, of course.” She bit her lip and gave Rebecca a nervous look. “Would this get you into trouble? I can try to pursue the interview on my own if it puts you at risk. It’s a bad first impression if I make my sister lose her job.” She gave a wary smile. Rebecca reassured her and her smile grew a little. “Well, don’t overdo it; but thank you for helping me.”
Sophie sipped her coffee and then smiled wide. “Man, this has been a great day! I have a sister and a potential story all at once! The story being much less important than having a sister, of course.” She giggled and then tilted her head to the side, a warm look on her face. “I’m really glad you came, Becca.” Her eyes widened when the nickname slipped out of her mouth, a little nervous that she might upset her. “Is it okay if I call you Becca?” It was and the smile returned to Sophie’s lips, but it was a little shier this time, an emotion she didn’t always display. Even as a kid she hadn’t been particularly shy, but the question on her mind made her feel like she was. “If it’s okay with you, I’d really like if we could be friends. You may be family, but we still have a lot to learn about each other. I just want to make sure you’re comfortable getting to know each other. So…would that be okay?” Maybe it was a silly question, and it made her cheeks turn a light shade of pink, but she wanted to be sure this was what they both wanted. She was sure it would time a lot of time and work to really be like sisters, but Sophie really wanted to try.
