“No, legos. I build lego towers for a living.”[/b] Owen said it with such a straight face that Gina had to pause and give him a suspicious look. He couldn’t be serious…The grin that spread wide across his face told her she was right to suspect him and she had to laugh. “I’m kidding. No, I’ve done homes in the past, that’s where I got my start, but I currently do work with office buildings. I play with legos too, though. So you know.”[/b] Gina nodded with a mock serious face. “Oh, I’m sure! They probably make great blueprints,” she replied, but she couldn’t keep up with the seriousness for long. Her smile spread across her heart-shaped face, giggling softly at the thought of a full grown man playing with legos. “I wouldn’t mind getting back into housing, though. I’d like to do work with apartment buildings, because after living in several over the last decade I’ve got some pretty good ideas. Whoever designed the ones around Fresno was clearly stoned at the time.”[/b] Again Gina laughed. He was as funny as his brother, if not a little wittier. She suddenly looked forward to meeting their parents to see where all of this humor came from. “Well, it is California. I wouldn’t be surprised if the architect was stoned,” she teased. Not that she could blame anyone for smoking pot. When she was young she’d enjoyed it too, but those days ended when she was recruited into the police academy. Owen glanced at the wall clock and Gina followed suit out of curiosity. The day had simply slipped through her fingers, it seemed.
“So, you’re a cop, huh?”[/b] Gina smiled at Owen and nodded. “Yes sir, I am.” His grin turned playful and she gave him a playfully curious look in return. "How'd you and my brother meet? He's a little vague on the details. I remember he left me a voice mail about how madly in love he was with this girl, and somehow, I don't know how, you two are actually still together. Not as lovey-dovey as I'd expected you to be, but still together."[/b] Gina flushed heavily, not aware that Gavin had called his brother about her when they were doped up on love potion; they were such idiots on that shit. But she did smile at Owen’s surprise over them still being together. She couldn’t blame him for it, so instead she found it amusing—neither of them had been relationship people until they met each other. Suddenly Owen’s grin turned from playful to devious. “Did you arrest him? I need dirt. I’m running out of ammunition.”[/b] Gina laughed at the question and the way Owen looked so eager to hear she’d arrested his brother. “I’m afraid it wasn’t as excitin’ as all that. I jus’ popped into the bar he works at t’ talk t’ his boss, actually, but ended up makin’ friends with him.” She left out the fact that she had been vulnerable and looking for someone to commiserate about the camps with, thinking of Kit in her time of need. She had wanted him to help her forget the weeks she’d spent in captivity and consequently help him in return. Instead she had found something much better. “We got pretty wasted that night. Actually, we were partyin’ that whole weekend. He was probably still drunk when he called ya’ll an’ left that message. I didn’t even know he’d called anybody…Or maybe I did but I was too drunk t’ remember.” She shrugged and gave a small giggle. “Anyway, when we came out of it, we still liked each other an’ decided t’ keep seein’ each other. An’ the rest is history.” Owen didn’t need to know the real magic that existed in Scriptor Bay and how his brother and she fell under it for three blissful days…and again a few weeks later.
Thinking back on her explanation of their meeting, she realized she might be coming off as a party girl to Owen. That wasn’t the impression she wanted to make! “I don’t want ya’ll t’ think I’m an alcoholic or anythin’. I was goin’ through some personal stuff when I met your brother and I wasn’t handlin’ it very well. But it’s different now. Your brother brought stability t’ my life when I needed it most.” She could see the look of surprise that Owen gave her and she laughed. “I know. Funny ain’t it? Two unstable people stabilized each other.” She hadn’t thought about that until now, but she realized it was true. They kept each other balanced and Gina was reminded how grateful she was for Gavin. He was just what she needed and she hoped she would have him for a long time to come. She smiled warmly, somewhat to herself as she sipped her cider. Her smile turned up to Owen and she tilted her head to the side playfully. “Sorry I don’t have more dirt fo’ ya’ll.”
