Claire went stiff and Fred felt unease fill his stomach. She pulled away and gave him an almost terrified look and he knew immediately he'd screwed up. It wasn't the first time Claire had given him that deer-in-the-headlights look that she had mastered some time during her life. She was quiet, and he knew it was because she didn't feel the same, which hurt. He reminded himself that Claire wasn't herself tonight, that just because she didn't confess her love, and was afraid of his words, didn't mean she didn't actually love him. A part of her did, she'd said it before. He should have known better than to say it now, but she'd seemed so concerned about him being with Chey!
“I don’t know what to say..” She didn't need to hear her say it to know she didn't know what to say. He knew her a lot better than she thought he did. Hell, at this point, he probably knew her better than she knew herself! “What do I say that won’t make me sound like a jerk hole? I mean.. we’ve been dating for a while.. I’m sure we’ve said it before, right? It’s just that it’s new for me because I don’t remember anything because.. my memories.. I don’t... remember.... memories.. yeah..” He wanted to kiss her to shut her up, but he didn't really want to kiss her, either. He was hurt, though he'd really set himself up for that disappointment. Fred knew she shouldn't have said anything.
"How about you don't say anything." He offered, leaning back a little and reaching his fork towards the cake. "I shouldn't have thrown that at you yet. This is going to take some time for me also, yah know? Just.. sometimes patting me on my hands enough or something." He couldn't look at her, upset by what was going on, though he knew it wasn't fair. He forced a smile and looked back up. "What do you think about finishing the cake while watching the rest of Ferris?" He suggested, hoping the movie would help them both move past the awkward moment, and also help him get over the fact that he couldn't possibly try and save Claire tonight. He was really missing his girlfriend now.
