“Maybe.” Jack grinned at Rebecca’s answer, though it was with his lips closed since he was still chewing. “Hey, the next time your hand comes near my plate again it’ll feel the wrath of my fork.” He snorted before he swallowed, genuinely enjoying the veal. “I’m paying for it so I get to have a bite.” That was always his rule. This time it was definitely worth invoking that rule. “Why do you ask about Valentine’s Day? Interested in being my backup date?” He gave a wide grin, feeling warm to the woman across the table from him again. Since she brought up going on a date with him, he was going to jump right on it. “Because I’m not real big on the whole Valentine’s thing. It’s for kids. Just an excuse to buy chocolate and flowers…but if you wanted to force feed me chocolate I might not argue too much.” He was about to comment when she suddenly looked away and down at her plate. Was she blushing? It was unexpected and he studied her curiously for a moment before he reached for his wine to take a sip. “I don’t think it’s force feeding when you actually enjoy what’s being fed to you.” His grin was lopsided and amused thinking about how little Rebecca would struggle if he tried to feed her chocolate. In fact, her only objection would probably be the fact that he was feeding her—she’d probably say something about being perfectly capable of feeding herself. He took another bite of his dinner and shrugged his shoulders.
“Actually, I would like to spend Valentine’s with you. It doesn’t have to be special or anything. We could just watch a movie at your place or something—nothing fancy. Just like any other night. No hearts or rainbows or anything.” He smiled wide at the way she looked like she would gag. For him it was mostly a superstitious thing—he didn’t want to not spend the holiday with the person he was involved with lest it tempt God or Fate or whoever to throw a wrench into their relationship. Maybe it was bound to happen anyway with Rebecca’s piss poor attitude, but he could still avoid any added bad luck by spending the evening with her. “I might wear a silky red thong, though. I’ve been kind of waiting for the right occasion to slip it on for you and Valentine’s just seems a good excuse to wear it. Maybe I’ll even get a bow tie to add to the ensemble. Thoughts?” He had to try hard not to laugh at Rebecca’s reaction, stuffing more food in his mouth. Eventually he did laugh, though so she would know he wasn’t serious about the whole thing. One of these days he would have to make good on all his threats of wearing something ridiculous to bed with her.
The more he thought about spending Valentine’s with Rebecca, though, the more he liked the thought of it. Maybe then he could ask the question he wasn’t able to ask tonight. Or maybe not…Either way, it would be a nice evening to spend with her and a good excuse to get her a big box of chocolates—preferably not in the shape of a heart. His smile was easy and kind as he considered his date by the candlelight on their table. “So what do you say, Becks? Will you be my Valentine?” He grinned wide before popping another piece of lamb into his big mouth. It was definitely worth the money he was going to put down for it…
